简介：byCraigHarris ThetraditionalsoundsofoldtimeystringbandmusicisonlyelementofthemusicaltapestrywovenbySanFranciscobasedquintettheWaybacks.RootsTownMusicMagazinecalledthem"adreamcombinationofpunkvandalismandhyperintelligent,seldomheard,humoristicmusicality,"whiletheWinnipegFreePresspraisedthemfortheir"unpretentiousmusicality."Describingtheirmusicalapproach,www.shoprecords.comwrote,"it'severythingfrom'Kumbaya'likefolkandcowboyjazz,spacejam,celtoid,agnosticgospel,beatpoetry,Grappelliesqueswing,andacousticoriginals."TheWaybacks'soundrepresentsthecombinedeffortsofleadguitar,mandolinplayer,andvocalistJamesNash;fiddle,mandolin,guitar,andHumanatoneplayerandvocalistChojoJacques;andrhythm,fingerpickedandWeissenbornslideguitarplayer,andvocalistStevieCoyle.AnativeofNashville,Nashhasbeenplayingguitarsincetheageofnine.Throughouthighschool,hestudiedwithrenownedNashvillesessionguitaristJerryKimbrough.RelocatingtotheSanFranciscoareatoattendStanfordUniversity,hebecameamemberofthealtrockbandOccam'sRazor.IncreasinglydrawntotraditionalSouthernmusic,hetaughthimselftoplaymandolin.InadditiontoworkingwiththeWaybacks,heperformsasasoloistandwithLane&theBadassChickenBones.Althoughheinitiallystudiedpianoandviola,Jacquesfoundhisnaturalvoiceontheguitar.Theinstrumentwasonlyonestep,however,onhismusicaljourney.AfterplayingguitarinatruckstopbarbandinEastMissoula,MO,hebeganstudyingfiddlewiththeMontanaFiddlersAssociation.Twoyearslaterheaddedthemandolin,whichheplayedwiththeLostHighwayBand.MovingtoAustin,hebecameinvolvedwiththecity'sthrivingmusicsceneforeightyears.AtthesuggestionofDavidGrisman,hemovedtoSanFranciscoin1982.Inthenearlytwodecadessince,Jacqueshasbecomeanindemandsessionplayer.Thelengthylistofartistswithwhomhe'sworkedincludesRamblin'JackElliott,JohnnyPaycheck,FrankWakefield,andMichaelHedges.MuchoftheWayback'sirreverentapproachisstirredbyCoyle,whoseresuméincludesemceeingkillerwhaleshows,doingstandupcomedyasonehalfoftheReaganBrothers,andperformingwithsatiricalfolkbandstheForemenandtheFrontmen.TheWayback'srhythmsectionfeaturesdoublebassplayerandvocalistJoeKyle,Jr.anddrummersChuckHamilton,whotourswiththegroup,andPeterTucker,whoperformswiththebandintheSanFranciscoarea.
