简介：Biography byEugeneChadbourne TejendraNarayanMajumdarhascreatedasuperbbodyofrecordingssincehisemergenceintheearly'80sasoneofthenewgenerationofIndianclassicalmusicians.Sincethattime,hehasbecomeoneofthetopperformersonthesarodinthisgenreofmusic.LikemanyotherclassicalIndianmusicians,hebegantostudyquiteearlyinlife.Hisfirstteacherwashisgrandfatherandwhenheworetheoldmanoutthenhisfathertookover.ButthestrongestofeducationalrelationshipswasforgedwhenhebeganstudyingwithacknowledgedsarodmasterUstadBahadurKhan,thenephewofIndianmusicalgeniusAlauddinKhan.MajumdarstudiedwithKhanfor18years,duringwhichtimehegrabbedfirstplaceintheAllIndiaRadiocompetitionin1981.Furtherhonorsincludedapresidentialgoldmedal.Whenhisteacherdiedin1989,MajumdarcontinuedhisstudieswithAjaySinhaRoy,andthenwasacceptedasadisciplebyoneofthegreatIndianinstrumentalists,UstadAliAkbarKhan,withwhomhehascontinuedtostudy.Majumdarperformsinhisrepertoireacombinationofpiecesfromthedhrupad,tantrakari,andgayakistylesofmusic.Hehasperformedatmostofthemajorconcertvenues,aswellastouringintheU.S.,Canada,andEurope.HisNewYorkdebuttookplacealongwithsitaristManilalNagin1994inaprogramattheNewSchool.Majumdarworkswithmanyfirstclasstablaplayersaccompanyinghim,amongthemPanditKishanMaharah,SankarGhosh,PanditSwqapanChaudbury,AnindoChatterjee,andUstadZakirHussain.CriticsareusuallythrilledwithMajumdar'sperformances;hehasevenbeencomparedtoBeethoven.
